Shopping at Costco is not new, but shopping at Costco in New York City is the latest trend!

Now the important thing to remember is that timing is everything. I would not suggest making a visit on the weekend …..need I say more. My visit was almost perfect and I do think that timing had something to do with the pleasure of the experience. We arrived at 6 PM and parked our car in the lovely and very spacious lot that is right outside the store. The store was almost empty…..dinner time for some but not for someone in search of great buys! By 7 o’clock the store started to fill up which was why we had to wait about ten minutes to check out. I think you should plan on getting there at 5:30PM and then you may miss the lines.

Some of my favorite sections:

Cosmetics: Best buy for me was Olay Regenerist…. two jars for $37.99!!! Last week  my friend paid $28 for one jar in the drugstore. Do you know  that this cream is topping all charts for best results for anti-aging….and I love the price!

Also from Olay is the Regenerist Advanced Anti Aging Eye Roller. This is perfect for reducing those pretty puffy eyes that nature gives us and it also reduces lines and circles….so they say. You can use this treatment every day……..and why not when two tubes cost only $29.99!

Vitamins: anything and everything you need….and we all need a lot these days.

The usual suspects were toiletries, paper products, detergent and cleaning supplies, waters and juices, cereals and crackers, health bars, and a frozen food section that is great for those of you who cook…..or are having a large party.

Departments that had great promotions were the electronics department from T.V.s to cameras and phones to Netbook computers and the jewelry department with great watch choices.

The owners of this brilliant Salon which opened in April are Victoria Hunter and Larry Raspanti.  After spending over 15 years at Bumble and Bumble, they have created a business model for a salon that is unique and have the pulse on how to make your experience as important as the actual service.

The charm begins when you enter this landmark building (one of the three oldest in NYC) at 45 Grove Street right off Bleecker.  Ok already I know your thinking, I can’t go down there it’s almost in another state. When you are finished, stop at Rocco’s Bakery (243 Bleecker St.) for an espresso and a little pastry; they are known for their cannoli’s and tiramisu. Then stop at Murray’s Cheese Shop (257 Bleecker St.) and pick up some cheese and a baguette. They have an amazing offering of over 200 cheeses!

Now you have a new “cut and color” and maybe a mani/pedi, treats from Rocco’s, tastings from Murray’s and hopefully you have a special bottle of wine awaiting you and your significant other at home. Set the stage, make sure your outfit is fabulous because we know your hair is….and enjoy a romantic evening.  And to think it all happened because you ventured away from your favorites to enjoy the treasures of Bleecker Street and the West Village!

Are you In the Know about cozy architectural sweaters?

The sweaters this season are outstanding. The challenge is where to find the right one  that flatters your shape yet speaks to the modern you. You must run….not walk to your favorite store and find the sweater that is right for you. For me, it is all about the architectural shapes that are fabulous for so many different bodies. They not only flatter your shape but they are cozy and oh so chic!

My favorites are from Vince: You probably never think of shopping Vince because it is usually located on the contemporary floor of major department stores. Trust me on this……go and try on a few of their sweaters. Most of these sweaters are one size……love that!

Next on my list is the batwing cowl neck with curved bottom from Juicy Couture……yes you are reading that correctly …..Juicy Couture. I couldn’t believe it either but when a fabulous sweater speaks to you…..you must listen. Black/$238.

And then there is a fabulous alpaca blend cardigan from Eileen Fisher/$198. This shape may be available in other yarns and colors.

These sweaters are statement pieces. Work them back to your slim/skinny pant or pencil skirt and boots and you are ready for work, lunch, or play! Dress them up with your jewels and dress down with your slim leg jeans or leggings. Remember fellow Tomatoes that sweaters make you better!  You’ll find these brands at upscale stores like Saks, Bloomingdales and Nordstroms.

Is summer really coming????

Well according to the calendar ….Summer has begun but I can’t say that there are any other signs around. Maybe because sun and summer used to be very dear friends …..we just can’t grasp what is going on out there!  All I can say is that the best items to have in your wardrobe  during these very wet days are:  a fabulous raincoat…preferably a trench, a great rain jacket for weekends and beach attire, rubber boots, a great rain hat,  and several umbrellas. Keep a stylish pair of sunglasses nearby…..I think we may have sun one day  this week…..happy summer!

Minetta Tavern……a must see

I never knew the history of Minetta Tavern nor the fact that there is a Minetta Lane in Manhattan! Minetta lane is charming with its newly planted trees and the new Minetta Tavern that has been rejuvenated by Keith McNally is in a word….brilliant! The mood is Now and yet the walls of photographs and characitures “speak” to a different era that was filled with nights of parties, fun and laughter. For sure I thought my parents and their friends would appear any moment……. dining in one of the fabulous red leathe booths. And I am certain that Mad Man will be filming one of their episodes here……if they ever come back …July 27th seems like an eternity.  Mr McNally’s success is obvious…he doesn’t miss a detail including the attire on the staff. I met someone who worked for him at one of his other establishements and she said he was a wonderful person to work for and was so inspired by his vision. I have already been back for a second visit and know there will be many more visits to come. Have yet to eat there but will report as soon as I do. You thought MacDougal street was busy before? The success of Minetta Tavern will push it to a new limit. Treat yourself to a cocktail at the bar and just absorb everything….not the least of which is the music!

Bottega Windows at Bergdorf Goodman’s…..

These fabulous windows display the collection from Bottega Veneto which includes Ready to Wear, Sportswear and the perfect leather bags, shoes and accessories. I had to stop and take in the beauty …especially the  sleeveless orange dress  with the oversized necklace…..this would be a great look for The First Lady…. and  would look fabulous on my friend GL. Bergdorf’s creative talent of how it was all put together was equally brilliant. It brings me great pleasure to see such richness in color, texture,  and quality. Don’t miss an opportunity to see them…..hurry. And then take time to visit the collection in the store…..enjoy!
